Hi,

I am new to this forum and have an urgent question(s).

I have a 60 litre Marina, with plastic plants, using a slim filter S15 system and a air pump for water circulation.

I have 3 goldfish, a danio and a bottom feeder.

2 of the Goldfish I added about 3 weeks ago and now the goldfish that has been in the longest has got white spots on his fins and some on his body. I have bought pets at home white spot treatment. I have used it for the past 4 days and have seen only an increase in the amount of spots on the fish.

One of the the other goldfish is now sitting on the bottom of the tank and only moves now and again.

I did not do a water change for the past 4 days and have added the white spot every 48 hours, adding 6 x 1ml drops. I have done a water change today, to see if that will assist the other fish and I have also took the filter out, so as not to put the white spot back into the tank.

I am I doing the right thing?????

Put that filter back in immediately before the bacteria die. Otherwise you will end up with a toxic ammonia spike maybe even mini cycle. White spot prasites aew freeswimming, not sure if thye hide in filters. To remove mediction add carbon to the filter. If the situation does not improve, repost this in the Emergencies section where whitespot experts can advise you

Hi newyork0900 welcome to the forums.

Your tank is very small as goldfish are actually supposed to grow to 12-18" and live for 20+ years. It is a semi-true myth that they grow to the size of their tank as they do stop growing but it prevents them from their organs fully developing causing premature death normally 1-3 years which is significant give that is less than 15% of their normal life span.

On with the problem you need to keep your filter in your tank and do not wash out the filter media. You need to provide the treatment as labeled on the bottle (48 hours seems a long time to leave the medication normally its every 24 hours, double check). You need to do regular water changes every 12 hours ideally around 50% of the water. Treat the fresh water that your adding to the tank with medication and dechlorinator prior to putting it in the tank so that you are not halving the amount of medication each time you take the water out. Do not use carbon in your filter until all the fish have fully recovered.

Start reading here and it should make everything clearer and let you enjoy your fish for years to come.
