Hey,

I recently have been sorting our pond out, and while doing so managed to capture [accidently] about 9 golfish fry. And as I have a spare tank I thought I'd keep them for a bit, especially seeing as our older goldies don't seem to let the fry get past a certain age!

I just wanted some advice on how best to care for goldfish fry?

I have some Liquifry for egg layers, but they don't seem too fussed about that, so I gave them some finely squashed flakes instead, which they all love [pic above] ^^^

Are there any special requirements for these fry?

Cheers,

Paul.

Aww arent they sweet.
Really you need to give them plenty of water, well oxygenated and well filtered. Plenty of water changes to keep from stunting and a varied diet.
Try and include either bbs and daphnia as a well balanced diet is important.

Cheers for the reply, they are quite sweet.

Can I stunt them when they are this small then? I will put them back in the pond once they are a few cm's, but I didn't realise I could stunt them from so early on?

I have some BBS eggs actually, will hatch some tomoro. Will the goldies tolerate the tiny amount of salinity if I use a pipette to feed them Brine shrimp with? Or should I siv out the salty water out completely?

Cheers,

Paul.

The salt wont bother the goldies too much but make sure there isnt too much going in.
Yes, its really easy to stunt any young fish if they dont have enough growing and swimming room.

What size of tank are they in now?

You will have to do daily water changes when feeding the brine shrimp as not all are eaten and some can die and pollute causing bacterial problems. Also, with eating so much in a day there will be lots of ammonia being produced so keep an eye on perameters.

The tank is one of those 19 litre hexagonal things, it has a carbon filter, and the stats aren't too bad:

PH - 8.0
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate - 30
Nitrite - 0.1

I'll do a water change to lower the nitrites today, and will carry on doing it everyday [as the weather is so hot here atm] and to keep the nitrites down.

They seem to be doing really well, have grown quite fast already. Do you know how long it takes for them to become a few cm's, as this is when I'll be placing them back in the pond?

Cheers,

Paul.

Not long for them to get big enough, maybe a month.
