My fantail goldfish has dropsy, i just found out on the internet. My question is, is it contagous? I have a small comet and a black moor in with it. The fastail has bulging eyes, bulging stomach and spicking up scales. what should i do?

thanks

Sean

Try and isolate him if you can. The dropsy itself is a symptom of a bacterial disease of the kidney, and though not contagious in itself you dont want the other fish picking at it when it does.
You need to up your cleaning of the tank, can you give us more info such as gallonage, filtration and how often and how much in water changes? Have you tested recently for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and ph?
As for the fish, once you see the pineconing its often too advanced to do anything for. If you have a spare tank and heater then raise the temp slowly to 80f and add 1/8th of a teaspoon of epsom salt per gallon.
Sorry but it doesnt look good.

should i put him into some sort of container, or euthenise him. Its a 10 gallon, 25% water changes a week. And the pump is very good its big and keeps the water clear. I know it dosent look good for him. When he dies, i am giving the commet to my mums friend who has a pond. Will the black moor be ok in a 10 gallon tank on his own. There all quite small at the mo.

If you can euthenise him properly then it would be for the best. Use clove oil though. The black moore will be fine on his own but do 40% water changes each week.

OK i'll go and tell my mum, there her fish i look after them. She wouldent know where to start about looking after them. I'll euthenise him, and thee commet will be gone in few days, the black moor is quite aggressive.

Goodbye fantail :-(
