hi i have just got a golden shark today i have never seen or heard of one before and was wandering if anyone has info on this boy

thanks

Scientific name?

The problem with common names is that many fish shops and importers will give a fish a fancy name to make it sound more appealing, for a proper identification the scientific name will be needed.

I would expect that as the fish has "shark" in the name it is a cyprinid.

u know it didnt have a scientific name on the display the only reason i ask the question is it doesnt look lik eone of the shark family i will have a word wiv the lfs tomoz

ok just found a place on the net that are selling golden sharks but no pics and they have the common name as Leptobra. Hoveni

As i thought, Leptobarbus hoevenii is a cyprinid. More commonly called the red finned cigar shark this is another cyprinid in the same league as bala sharks and tinfoil barbs, they can reach lengths of up to 20" and should be kept in a group since they are schooling fish, a tank of at least 8 feet in length will be needed to house a group of the adult fish.
They will eat anything ranging from lettuce and cucumber (and live plants if you have any) through to small fish, live foods like bloodworm, daphnia and shrimp are favourites.
