I have just bought my first Plec - he is in a 48" x 18" x 12" tank with a bunch of tetras, 2 x gourami, 2 x paradise fish, 3 x albino corys, and a handfull of male guppies.

At the moment, he is in hiding - I've seen him about 3 times today, so I do think he is settling in.

What I would like to know is what diet would suit him. All I can find is advice on bristlenoses and common plecs - no data on golden nuggets.

There is a BIG piece of bog wood in the tank with tons of algae on it and there is plenty of hidey-holes for him to skulk in.

There are also numerous plants in the tank.

well my pleco's love cucumber, i think that the gold nugget might like meaty foods so prawn might be a good idea its great for my uncle owns a fish monger so free prawns.

but check out planetcatfish.com

Yeah - I have found a couple of mentions for prawns and muscles - so will try them.

I've also seen mention of Pleco flakes - I have never seen these in any of the fish shops near me - will have to ask if anyone can get some in.

Cheers

Pets at home sell algae wafers but i havent seen any for the plec's that eat meat.

Gold Nuggets are Byransistrus so have a mostly meat based foods. Prawn, White bait, Muscle, that kind of thing. :good: GN's are highly territorial to other plecs, so you need to get any others s/he is in with out before s/he settles, matures and starts knocking the living daylights out of them...

All the best

i feed my golden nugget prawns mussels and bloodworm supplemented with cucumber and pleco wafers. you wont see the fish all that often they are a very shy species and most active at night. i wqay i have found of seeing mine out more often is to have a dim light which i switch my tank over to in the evening then to a blue light at night to mimic moonlight.

Mine eats everything, bloodworm, mysis shrimp, algae wafers, cichlid pellets, shrimp pellets etc. I guess their temperament varies between individuals as mine isn't shy at all and will come out at all times of day, particularly when food is around

Has anyone ever bred these things? Everyone seems to say they are very difficult and no reports of breeding are recorded but I also see other sources claiming to put a current and they're fine...

I wouldn't mind getting some and having a go, but its a huge investment here to buy 2 or 3, especially if there is no way its gonna happen...

Larry Vires claims to have bred them.

I know at least a couple of people attempting it now
