Hi everyone,
I have a pair of Golden eye Dwarf Cichlids in a 15 gallon heavily planted tank. I have supplied loads of hiding places and I am trying to get them to breed. I did all the things that the books say, like leaving the female in there first so it is her territory then introducing the male. They start off all right both displaying full colours to each other but after a day the male becomes super aggressive and rips the female's tail. Last time he took the whole tail and it took a month of recuperation to get the female back into form! I am trying again but i can see rips in her tail again. Any advice for this kind of behaviour?

I'm not very familar with this cichlid but it might be that they are both males could tell me the scientific name? I'm geussing its a type of Apisto and sometimes the male can be very hard on the female.

if it is as apisto, then i suggest you keep more than one female with the male. Males become aggresive if there is only 1 female and it could stress her a lot :/

is this a nanacara that you have . Is the male blueish with gold flecks . Is the female half the size and very plain looking , brownish like many apisto females [ nanacara are not apistos ] . The only golden eye dwarf cichlid I ever heard of is the nanacara . They bred pretty fast for me , to fast as a matter of fact . Unfortunatly my pair died :dunno: , but the fry hung around for a while .

try searching google for golden eye dwarf cichlids or nanacara , there are 2 species of nanacara one is the golden eye , you may have 2 males , the kid that sold me mine didn't have a clue , I had to tell him , he thought the males and females were 2 different kinds of fish .

I have a pair of Nannacara Anomala. and its defineately a male and a female. the male is big blue/brown and is always making faces at the female who is small and yellow. I asked my local fish store about breeding them and he siad not to get another female, as the females will fight!! So i think i will have to be patient and make sure he doesn't bite tooo much of her tail. Thanks for your help

Mine spawned inside a 3/4" piece of tubing if that helps , try giving your female some [ many ] hiding places . I guess just be patient .

very cool looking fish . I had the same species of nanacara that you have .

Absolutely love these fish, its amazing to watch the male displaying. they looked so dull when i first got them they were both plain yellow. Turns out the female is getting her revenge, he may have bitten her tail but she is biting his fins. So alls fair in love and war!! If they breed I'll let you know!
