Golden Apple is flaking

Help! My golden Apple Snail, Brian, seems to have a crusty shell along the edge, it is chipped and flaking.

I'm not sure if this is because he has a habit of digging himslef under rocks and things or because of something he lacks in his diet...

He mostly just eats the algae pellets that I feed my Catfish but is there something else that he should be eating?

I read somewhere that they need calcium to help their shells grow strong
however be aware that adding calcium to you tank will alter its ph.
