Hi, i hope somebody reads this as i urgently need help, for the last 2 weeks my parents gold severum has not been eating, he was in a 260ltr tank but moved him to my tank which is 180ltrs to see if he would perk up a bit but nothing has changed. All he does is hide behind plants away from the other fish, he has lost almost all of his weight and has nothing left of him. It looks as if he is breathing really heavily even though there is enough oxygen throughout the tank. I havn't checked all the PH and stuff but i just cleaned my tank last friday and all of the other fish are fine. Also it looks like theres a small white thing hanging off 1 of his gills but i dunno if it is nething or not. I hope somebody reads this really soon and if you do please sujest something lol thanks

Hey Oregon :)

To help you we need to know a little more about your tank: what's the temperature? What other fish are there? What kind of filter do you have? When you did the waterchange, did you do anything differently? You really should check your pH, nitrate and nitrite readings.

You could try tempting your sev with live food, your local fish store should have some. Also, the white thing could be a parasite (gill flukes) or fungus. Is it hanging off like a long worm sort of thing, or is it more fluffy looking?

hi, my temp is at normal (79) it varys between 75 and 82, i've got a list of fish on my profile if you need to know what ones are there. umm i have the stand juwel filter and a hydor power filter in the tank which keeps it spotless. when i done the water change i only took 5 buckets out instead of 9 but even at that the water is still clear. like i said the severum belonged to my parents in the 260ltr tank and he was fine until 2 weeks ago, he just randomly stopped eating so i moved him to my tank but nothing has changed. neither me or my parents done anything different to either tanks so we dunno what has caused this. this also happened to my parents parrot cichlid which stopped eating, lost all its colour and then died. i dunno what happened to the white thing, i checked for it today and it wasn't there, i put parasite treatment in so thats maybe why but im not sure. it was hanging like a small fat worm like thing.if there was something wrong with the ph and everything wouldn't all the fish be affected? also its hard to find live food, not even the local fish store does it, only place i can find it is ebay lol i try to keep them away from live stuff as i dont want my knifefish to get to keen on live foods as i have plenty of fish that he can fit in his mouth lol. the food that me and parents feed all of the fish are a mixture of stuff, most days its ordinary flake and every second day or so they will get frozen bloodworm and krill, they usually get prawns aswell.

The white thing hanging of the gill does it look like a strand of cotton or a parasite.

Does the parasite have a forked tail.
Do the gills look red and inflamed or pale with excess mucas.
Tiny white worms behind the gills are gill flukes, which also cause weighloss and bacterial infections.
Signs of gill flukes and skin flukes.
Gasping at the surface of the tank or rapid breathing.
Flicking and rubbing against objects in the tank.
Opaque body with excess slime.
Red inflamed gills to pale gills with excess mucas.
Sometimes weight loss.
Swimming in a jerky movment.
Spitting food out.
Sores on the body of the fish.
Erratic swimming.

the worm that was there dissapeared yesterday, im not even sure what it was, it basically looked like the tail end of a worm but smaller obviously, it was quite chunky though. the severum has got worse since last night, he hasn't got any colour left to him, instead of a gold and orangey colour hes basically white. I even managed to touch his head last night and he didn't move so he has no energy at all. out of the list above he has rapid breathing but its like hes gasping at the same time, extreme weight loss, managed to get food in his mouth last night but he spat it back out. on that website you gave me it sounds like gill flukes but i can't get a great visual on the gills.

To be honest he sounds very bad and not going to make it.
You need to find out what type of parasite it was.
