I posted this in the Emergency Forum but was advised to post here.

I have had a gold nugget plec for probably 2+ months now.
He hides out 90% of the time in a piece of driftwood and I almost never see him. That's fine, I realize they are shy and nocturnal. I was worried that he wasn't eating because every time I dropped algae wafers or carnivore pellets in the tank, he would ignore them and the other fish would eat them. But since I have had him 2 months and he isn't dead or emaciated, I figure he is eating something.
Anyway, the last week or so, he has been coming out more. I figured he was finally getting comfortable in the tank. Great.
But now i noticed splotches on his skin. They are not white and fuzzy, like a fungus, and it is not a film. It is sort of a general discoloration in him. Small splotches look faded. It started with a tiny patch and has gotten worse.
I have no pic, I tried several times without success
Tank is 35G hex. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, exact nitrate is unknown but I do weekly water changes and it has never been a problem. The water is soft and acidic. He is never harassed by other fish and other then one of my hatchets getting ICH, I haven't had any recent problem.
The water did get a little cloudy; I have been trying to figure out why, but attributed it to overfeeding. As noted above there was never any traces of ammonia so it could be something else.
Nothing has been added recently to the tank in the way of decorations, plants etc.
I have had no recent deaths except a few marbled hatchets that died shortly after adding them. This is almost 100% attributed to acclimation problems and not a problem specific to my tank.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
