Hi
i bought a gold nugget plec last weekend for my 40G community tank and ever since he's been hiding behind the bogwood and doesn't seem to patrol the tank like the sailfin i have.

is this normal and is there anything i can do to get him out and about, he's gorgeous as far as i can remember. a bit of a waste of money at the moment as you wouldn't even know he's in there.

this is the tank he's in

i didnt see mine for the first couple of weeks, they spent most of the time hiding behind my filter. unfortunately the tiny one i had died within the week, but the other is doing great, and now hes established his "spot" on a rocky cave hes quite often out and about. Not to the same extent as my gibbicep though, hes a bit more shy than him

It is normal don't worry. Mine hides a lot but check yours out at night, thats when mine becomes active.

i remember Ryan telling me about GN plecs, according to him they hide for 23.5 hours of the day and come out to feed the rest of the time

fed bloodworm at 11.30 last night with tank lights off and room lights on.

no sign of the gold nugget. just lots of danio's frantically bashing into each other in the dark.

i'll be patient i think and just let him do his thing. never mind at least i can see his nose now as he seems to have found his hiding place behind some bogwood.

With a tank as well presented and well planted as your own appears ( thats a complement by the way ) I would doubt that you will see the nugget very often. Unfortunately thats the way they are. It will be a bonus when you do see it

i must have a weird gold nugget pleco cause i see mine all the time :/, although he/she is a tricky bugger to get a picture of

I brought home a gold nugget last week as well. Here he is in the quarantine tank (and yeh, that is fake green gravel - but it is a quarantine tank and the fish could care less!)

If you put a piece of zucchini in the tank, he'll come out for a picture!

Its normal to see them behaving like that hiding all day, especially if they;re new to the tank. Just give it some time and soon it'll be running out in the open during feeding time.

My dad used to have a Golden nugget plec in his 50gal community tank and we hardly ever came out but about evry 4 hours we would be able too see him. But then one day we came home and found his skeleton flaoting at the top. :(

Golden Nuggets are a bit disappointing because they do hide a lot. Mine died, sadly. I now have a Bristlenose Plec and he only hides a bit. He is a lot more visible and more keen to eat. :)

I've had my GN for 3 weeks or so, he must check our clock and at 8:30pm every night he comes out for a good rasp on topside of the bogwood.

He has a little hiding place underneath the bogwood. I love watching him have a good rummage.

I have to say, I see him far more than my vitattas catfish!

Also, I'm not quite sure what he eats, I'm assuming he munches on the algae tabs I put in the tank - they're both alive and looking healthy so I must be doing something right!
