Gold Fish Upside Down?

Hi, 1 of our fish keeps swimming upside down, just wondered what this could be the cause for?, cheers

it has a swimbladder problem.
there are 3 main causes of swimbladder problems in goldfish

1) physical injury; think how hard it is for us to breath with cracked or broken ribs,
the same goes for a fish, if it has injured its' body in such a way that the swimbladder can not inflate/deflate properly
it looses its balance and often turns upsidedown.
only time will heal this problem, there is nothing you can do.

2) intestinal blockage; again if the fish is constipated then the build up of waste is affecting its abiltiy to regulate its swimbladder.
feeding it a cooked, deshelled, garden pea will help as this acts as a laxative and flushes the system out as will bloodworm.
to prevent this kind of problem in the first place, only feed your goldfish sinking foods. often when feeding from the surface they
gulp in air and that can become lodged in their digestive tract.

3) internal bacterial infection; you can get an antibacterial medication that may or may not help.
if you are in the UK Interpet do a med just for this, but IMHO, their internal bacterial med is far better

Hi, cheers for that, the number 2 thing you say about the pea, do i just cook a pea, but take the skin off and feed it that you mean?.
That is if that is if thats the problem for it, constipation, thanks.

Many fish will eat peas. They are a food that is high in fiber, and the fiber has the same effect on fish as it does on humans...it makes them poop.

well i dd the pea, coked it, pealled the sking off and pu it near the fish mouth, but it didnt eat it and it fell to the bottom of the tank then

Is the fish the right way up yet? If not then starve it for 3 days and this will show if its food and gas related.

no its still upside down, but i cant starve it as theres another 1 in the tank, but hes fine.

Starving them both wont harm the one thats well as healthy goldies can go a couple of weeks without feeding. You could drop a squashed pea in for the healthy one if you know ite sick one cant reach it.

Dont feed them flaked food if you are get a sinking granular food.

regards this again, the fish at times is still upside down, also like a 'bruise' on 1 side of it, what could that be i wonder

Bruising under the skin is a sign of septiceamia.
You need to test your water for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and the ph.
How big is the tank and how often and how much are you doing water changes? Do you use a gravel vac as well?
Filtration is important with goldies as well.
