Me and my family are going on holidays on Tuesday, and I've decided to let my friend down the road care for Jerry - it's only 3 days. We'd be taking him down on Monday night.

I'm going to do a 100% water change before he goes, just be be sure. We'd be picking him up Thursday afternoon and I'd do another full water change then. He's just regrown his fins (when I bought him he had fin rot) so I'm being extra careful.

Do you think he'd be okay for two days without a water change? I know, I'm paranoid but I don't want his rot to return.

In my opinion, just to be safe. Have your friend not feed him so much. Promise Jerry he'll get a big treat of bloodworms if he consents to a diet while your away. Alas, my friends are not fish experts, and the friend watching my fish has trashed my tank twice already by feeding the fish too much or completely ignoring it. I will have to teach her how to do a water change for this December, or get a new friend.

Thanks lljdma. :) I've written her up a timetable (she asked for one) so she knows how much to feed and when to feed. She has a betta herself, so I think she'll be fine with the care side of things. :)

But I don't want her to have to do a water change... just to minimise the risk of things that could go wrong. Do you think Jerry would be okay without changes for 2 days?

Betta's are fine without food for a few days. Mine goes 2-3 days regularly if I go away for the weekend. He's also gone 4 days without food while I was away at a conference. He'll be fine!

Thanks boozybears. :)

I'm not worried about the food aspect, she has a betta and I've shown her this morning how much to feed mine. But do you think he will be okay going without water changes for that time, since he is beating off fin rot?

Unless he's in a tiny cup or bowl I don't think 3 days without a water change will be bad. Just have your friend feed him minimally to keep ammonia down in the bowl during that time. You could maybe send a jug of already dechlorinated water with him, and maybe have your friend change the water that way if you really feel it's needed.

Thanks Karah's_Mommy. :) I think I'll just get her to feed him a bit less than normal, thanks. :)

If he's in a 1 gallon or larger he'll be perfectly fine without water changes. I only do water changes on my 1 gallons once a week, and I recently tested the water before I changed it on water change day, and there was only about .1ppm. No nitrite or nitrate of course, since the tank isn't cycled.

Thanks Synirr. :)

I think he'll be okay... I suppose I was just being a paranoid mum. I feel quite happy and comfortable now... my friend put her betta Rags next to Jeremiah and far from being agressive, they just stared at each other.

They are both red VTs so I guess they just thought they were a reflection in the glass. Jerry gave me a little kiss (it was really a bite but kiss sounds more affectionate :p) on the finger before I left.
