O.K. folks it holiday time once again. What do you do to keep your fishes happy and fed? Those of you who have friends and relatives that you allow into your house or fish hut are the lucky ones. What about the others, how do you keep your fishes happy for 2 weeks or more? Love to hear from you.

Dragon,
Wish I could help you here, but alas I am one of the lucky ones. My brother-in-law tends my house as well as my fish. I just make sure that all water changes are current and all equipment is running properly before we leave.

Then again my wife and I usually only go away for a few days at a time.

Ok people...let's hear from you on this one. I am curious myself to see how others keep the wet pets happy while gone.

If you are unable to have someone check your tanks daily to ensure filtration/airation, heat, automatic feeder, are all functioning properly you should not be leaving your fish for more than a weekend. However, if you attach a back-up power source, add slow release cubes in addition to your auto feeder, and add extra pumps & airstones you may leave your fish only for dire emergency.
If you cannot perform either of the above funtions you should not own fish and should purchase a cat.

Micheal,
Good advice...except for the cat. Even if YOU don't like cats...they still need to eat also.

Please clear up one point ...

If one is able to provide someone to check their tanks....then why would one need an automatic feeder?

I mean if one trusts one enough to have the experiance and knowledge to fix a filtration or any other equipment  problem...should they not be trusted enough to feed the fish also?

An interesting point of view Michael, thanks for that, however I do agree with Larry's comment. How do justify your comments? No this is not getting at you, only that I wonder where you're coming from. So what you are saying is that you never leave your fish for more than a weekend. Uhmmmm, from your past comments...I don't think so.

Michael you're a charming well mannered chap.

I recently had to got to hospital rather unexpectedly and had no chance to do the whole water change, fliter cleans etc before i went. And had to impose on a friend to look after my fish for me, and all i came home to was my fish swimming around and a coating of algae which happens to most new marine tanks anyway, by the way my cats were fine too!!

If you never take a holiday you still cant be sure you will always be around, so on that note surely in michaels opinion we should never keep any pets.

Before i go away i give my friend a quick brief of how much to feed and when, all he has to do is feed them the amounts i have left and ring me if he needs any advice if something doesnt look right
