if you decide to go on holiday for a week or more, what do you do about checking salinity levels apart from the obvious? getting the neighbour round?

Do you have a sump?
If so draw a line where the water level should be. Then get them to fill it up with RO from a tub you leave next to the tank

im planning ahead, but i could do the same thing on the tank right? just ask them to fill to the line with RO?

Yeah, get a dry-wipe marker pen that will just rub off.

I use electrical tape to mark the waterline even my dense friends who don't have a clue about fiskeeping can handle that and feeding.

FWIW I also have a short list of fellow local reefkeepers whom I've asked to be "on call" in case a problem arises that my brilliant friends can't handle. Never needed to tap them for their help yet, but better safe than sorry
