im going on holiday tomorrow for a week and i am just wondering if there is anything i should do before i go to keep my fish safe. (i have someone to feed the fish)

i am going a large water change tonight. should i rinse the filter media? anything else i should avoid or do?

thanks

I'd just do the regular stuff, 1 week isn't bad. A water change just before you go and one when you get back. If you do feel the need to rinse the media, do about 25% or so, and do it in tank water not tap water (the chlorine will kill the bacteria).

One good tip is to measure out the food before you go, those medicine containers are useful as they have compartments for the days of the week. Instruct only to feed what you say and nothing more (alot of cases of overfeeding by friends/relatives when people go away). I'd also cut back on the amount of food you give them, as this will reduce the waste a little bit more. Fish should be able to go a week without food anyway, so feeding isn't that important really.

Unless the media needs rinsing because of a slow down of flow for instance, then no dont clean it as you wont be around in case you overclean it and cause a mini cycle. Do a good 50% w/c with gravel vac and thats it. Just to say also, you dont actually need anyone to feed them for a week as they can survive longer without food. If you have left instructions for feeding, ensure they are not overfeed as can be the case with people that are not used to keeping fish.

put your fish food in daily amounts in seprate packet so your fish dont get over fed,do your normal water change and off you go :good:
enjoy your holidays :hyper:

you only need the neigbour to come in once, well not at all, as minx said fish will be fine without food. my fish all survived when i spent 3 weeks in aus without feeding (not my fault) but i wouldnt recommend it

I don't bother for a week but if I go away longer I get a nieghbour to feed every OTHER day as if they feed every day you can bet your life they will over feed
