Hi,

I have four discus and a couple of Tetras in my tank. I am planning to go on holiday for 8 days at the end of the month, I will do a water change the mornong before I leave. What do one do with regards to feeding the fish?

This is a subject close to my heart because I went on holiday for 14 days and when I got back my tanks were decimated.

My friend had had problems with the lights, which I'd asked her to turn off if the tanks got too hot, because she couldn't get them back on again afterwards. So my lights were out for 10-11 days and when I got back, all my plants were dying.

This sent my nitrate levels through the ceiling, causing terrific over-growth of brown algae. The temperatures in my tanks continued to rise to 90F on some days and to cap it all, my friend misunderstood my instructions and over-fed all my fish! :-(

So, having learned from this terrible experience, I've realised never to trust neighbours to feed the right amount. I had explained to my friend about over-feeding, about how fish were cold blooded so didn't need as many calories as warm-blooded, etc etc. But my mollies are cute and greedy, and my neighbour is soft-hearted.

I don't know much about discus, except that they're expensive and won't eat flake, but I presume they can go several days without food, like most fish? If so, why not get a neighbour to go in once during your 8 day vacation and feed your fish a pre-pared, small amount of food?

The two biggest dangers to your fish are over-feeding and temperature. Discus can probably cope with high temperatures and anyway, the heatwave seems to have past. Oh, and then there's power outages, but that's a problem if you're there or not - give your neighbour a battery powered pump and ask him to set it up should the worst happen.

Good luck!

Thanks Anna,

I'll ask the neigbours to do a feed after 4 days.

I have a battery operated air pump that you just set up with it plugged in, batteries already in it. When it no longer detects an electrical current, in kicks in. I plan to have one for all my tanks eventually.

As far as feeding goes, would they eat those wafers you can put into the tank that are supposed to last as long as a week? I've never used the before, but it might be somethingnworth checking into.

Have a great vacation! Where are you going? (Just so I can possibly be envious  )

Discus are notoriously picky and will often only eat live, fresh or frozen food. They are also incredibly sensitive to deterioration in water quality, and holiday blocks can pollute your water. Not a problem for your average tetras and what not (usually) but definitely a problem for discus, even if they could eat such things (which they probably couldn't).

I am going to Egypt at the end of September.

I will let you know how it all went on my return. I am sure the water chemistry and overall conditions would be OK, I have very good filtration in the tank and it all seems very stable (or has been for a while). I am doing a 30% water change every 7 to 10 days (half RO water/half tap water) and the discus seems to do very well in the tank.

The one is a bit dominant and seems to chase the other three around every now and then but I'll leave it up to them to sort the territories out for themselves (is that the best way ro do it?)

HOPE U HAVE NICE NEIBORS TO FEED UR FISH BECAUSE DISCUS ARE AHRD TO TAKE CARE OF
