Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem with Glowlight Tetras......i have 10 in my 4ft tank and 5 in my 2 ft tank but have noticed that they go swollen underneath for no aparent reason and they loose there orange stripe then eventually yes they die :/ .Ive always had them in my tanks since i started fish keeping over 2 years ago and they always seem to go the same way.I cant find much on any site in relation to how long they live.I reckon mine are roughly 6-8 months old.No other fish are affected and i dont incure any more losses when they go like this!!

I have just got a tank and the first fish I put in there were glowlights, 1 of them seemed really swollen after a little while, & thought she might have gotten pregnant, but have been told since that they don't. Were there any other symptoms to look out for cos I don't know why else she would be bloated? When you say no other fish are affected, do you mean no other species or none of the other glowlights? I really hope she doesn't have this mysterious disease, I've grown really attached already

I bought glowlights a couple of weeks ago & noticed they dont stop eating unitil nothing else will fit in their mouths! and they swell quite a bit, Im just limiting the amount of food i feed them. :)

I think there are a few reasons why a fish would swell and die, and usually hard to treat. I've never had any success. But try looking it up in faq in the emergency section.

IME, glow lights are sensitive to water quality and fluctuations in the environment compared to other tetras. I had glow lights in my first community tank, which I inevitably made a lot of mistakes with. They were always the first to go. Putting off the water change and then doing an extra large one killed them every time. Moving the tank to the next room killed them. I'd say the three mistakes I made were
1)fluctuations in water quality.
2)letting them get cold while I was messing around in the tank half full with the stupid non submersible heater off in a small 10 gallon tank (they didn't used to make fully submersible heaters)
3)poor water quality

It may be that you are making one or more of these mistakes and they are getting sick from a low immune system due to stress. Or you may need to diagnose some serious problem that can't be fixed by eliminating stress.

I actually hope this doesn't help and that you're not making the stupid mistakes with them that I did.

I just checked your other posts and see you were having what you thought might have been a nasty parasite problem and all your fish were losing weight. You mentioned the swelling glow lights in that thread, too. How did the treatment go? Did you get the med that wilder reccommended for it?

right now i have five glowlights and are all doing fine in my 55 gallon community. What are your water conditions, other fish, and does your tank provide hiding spots or shelter?
:D

sorry took a while to get back on been away for a few days, anyway i was speaking to a aquatics dealer and he reckons its some sort of disease prob septicimia they had all the signs of the infection, they are very sensitive to light which i know anyway, but i have a very heavily planted to tank and loads of decor for hiding. When i water change i always put the same temp and use same conditioner etc etc so i doubt it is fluctuations.Yes ive noticed they are always eating aswell so i cut down on the feeding too.
Tammy yes i got the med Wilder recommended but i tryed a few others too, over a space of weeks of course,so i cant really say which worked and which didnt all i know is i spent loads of cash on crap meds over a few months which didnt do anything at all.Like i say ive had them long before i had the septicimia outbreak and they always die like this.Oh before i forget the weird thing is ive got 8 Albino Glowlights too and there fine had them for approx 6 months and there always out in the light and dont seem to eat as much or swell up like the standard glowlights

Interesting about the albinos being resistent to it. Are all the regular ones gone now, or have you figured out what to use to treat it now that you think you know what it is?

i culled most of them which had been unwell for a few weeks as they just got worse and seemed resistant to various treatments,it was my mistake in the first place as i introduced a few fish that i didnt quarantine and it went from there really.....i will know better next time
