Hi guys. New (therefore quite naive!) 60L tank owner here who should have read up on fishless cycling first. Unfortunately was told that the tank would be fine after 4 days and bought 2 glowlight tetras. Looks like plenty of work ahead to keep these little guys alive!

Anyhow, just a quick question about lighting. I read that this species 'looks better' in subdued light and with dark substrate. I already, quite by chance, have the dark substrate, but the tank (Marina 60) came with quite a strong light. I don't really mind about the glowlights looking better - I'm more concerned with the well-being of the fish. But I can't seem to find out if they actually require low light for better health. If so, what wattage of light would be best for these fish?

Many thanks for any help!

Lower light won't make them any healthier. Lots of plants real or fake will make them more comfortable. As will increasing the school size to at least 6 glow-lights, after the tank has cycled.

Thanks for that

I've got a few ornaments and a fake plant that they like to hide around. If these guys survive, I plan on getting some more in a few weeks when the tank is ready.

Make sure you do daily water changes and keep water stats, if they tank is uncycled it will be a lot of work trying to keep them alive. Atleast there rather small and won't really murder themself in 60 :p

I tested the water today (master test kit), 24 hours after putting the fish in. pH was 7, no ammonia. Planning a partial water change (maybe 20%?) later today and daily testing until all's stable. Thanks!
