Saw some Glofish, those zebra danios that are red and supposed to glow. Thought they were pretty cool but 9.00 a piece. I was thinking of getting a few but Just wondering whats your opinion on them?
I know some people think they are bad, but personally, it's not like you are dyeing the fish. They are just adding genes into the fish they wouldn't originally had. Now, if they get a disease only glofish get, I'd probably change my mind...
Glofish are a ethical dilemma for some. Personally I see nothing wrong with them besides the price. $6.00 is supposed to be the "recommended" price but often that price varies. My LFS had them for $7.00 each. The normal Zebras go for .33¢ each by comparison.
Glofish were developed as a diagnostic tool. They therefore exist. I do not believe, however, that they should be commercially exploited with the resulting profit going into someones pocket, as I am sure is happening. I am against their sale.
I had one, only becuase my frined just gave me one for free, I wasnt paying 6 dollars on a danio. Imo there both the same, really not a difference, if you want zebras, I would just get regular zebras.
Personally I find it a lot more interesting with colours that have developed naturally to fill a function in the wild, but I don't think they actually suffer, so I suppose it's ok to buy them if you want to.
I have no interest in glofish, no real reasons in particular, but if i wanted zebra danios and i buy zebra danios and not a fish that is commercially exploited in such a way- morals aside, its not whole lot different for buying dyed fish, that is, you are buying them for what they look like and not what they are .
