Hello,

I have owned a tank now for around 20 months, have dealt with many typical fish diseases in my tank over the months, but it has finally started to calm itself down. Recently, about a month ago, my Orange GloFish Tetra, Herald, began having issues with his balance. Herald is a flat vertical fish, his tail-end seems to be raising up and you can see him correcting himself to stay balanced. Once he corrects it, then sometimes his head will start going up and he will correct himself again. He will always stay vertical and never sway, but I assume this must stress him out. I have been carefully monitoring him, from when this started a month ago, and began researching it. My research only gave me the idea of Fish Bladder Disease, but as he is a thin-vertical fish, I none of his organs seem to be expanded and there is no bloating. I think I can rule that out.

I have seven GloFish in total and I have not seen any of the others have this issue. Herald's fins are good, his eyes are normal, his attitude has not changed, he still eats, he's about 14-15 months old, he just has the weird balance issue. The issue described above was from about one month ago. As of today, he seems to just have his tail end going up and he corrects himself to be balanced. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Austin

This does sound like a swim bladder issue. This can be caused by several factors, from some diseases, internal protozoan, chilling, water issues (ammonia, nitrite, pH rapid fluctuations, temp), or it can be genetic. I have never come across any treatment that cures it, and I suspect that once this occurs it is permanent. I have had fish suddenly develop this and live for weeks, even months, while others don't last long at all.
