I saw at my LFS in the live foods section 20 Glass Shrimp ( another name for ghost shrimp??) for 4$. I was wondering If I could introduce these into my peaceful tank Without Adding to the bioload. I Thought as Amano Shrimp hardly contribute to bioload and are very helpful that glass shrimp might have a similar effect?

I think they would not add much. They also help compensate by eating alot of ammonia producing waste. I have added various numbers of them to different tanks and never noticed any bio load spikes. They are very cool and get alot bigger than I expected.

I love my ghost shrimp! After about a couple days, they stop hiding and come out in the middle of the daylight and scavenge for food! They're greedy too! One of mine tried to eat a whole shrimp pellet (yes SHRIMP pellet) which was about as big as himself, needless to say, he failed miserably!

They are incredibly fast also, if you startle them, they will kind of "jump" in the water, they can go across my whole tank within a slit-second! They are jumpers too! so becareful if you have to move them, and hold the net together so that they can't jump out!

They don't add to the bioload whatsover.

You have to be carefull though, i've heard that you can get ghost shrimp in rivers, brackish wather and the sea.
The ones in the lfs may have been colected in brackish water or the sea and could die in freshwater-and 20 dead shrmp would probably screw up the tank :/ .

You will probably be ok, but if i were you i would try out with one for a week and see how it does.

Ghost shrimp at your LFS are all freshwater.

There is another species of ghost shrimp that is saltwater, but can be kept in brackish. They will die in fresh so most LFS only carry them in the saltwater section.

Regular ghost shrimp are from rivers.

lol this thread died ages ago. My Ghost Shrimp numbers have slowly dropped. I have only got 9 now but they are all big and fully grown. I Knew the ones I got were freshwater as they had some labelled Saltwater as well and they were 8$ for 12 I think.

It depends on what fish are in the community and which shrimp yoiu are considering.

Most shrimp are not harmful to fish, with the exception of long armed shrimp which have claws.

Most fish are ok except large ones or ones that eat similar foods in the wild: ie puffers, cichlids.

More specific info would aloow for a more complete answer.

I have 3 glass/ghost shrimp in my community tank with no problems what so ever. if anything its funny watching a fish come close and both of them jump n run when a feeler gets brushed.
