Glass Catfish.

Hi,

as the title says really, I want to buy a group of 6, but the ones in my LFS have tiny whiskers as they are in a tank with faster swimming fish. Their whiskers are only 2-3 mms in lengh. Will they regrow does anyone know?

They will be in my community tank wiht tetras.

The barbels take time to grow. Depending on exactly how old the fish are, it may be normal growth. Barbels should be fairly well sized by about 3 months old.


A clue would be the substrate in the LFS tank. If it's coarse gravel, they could be worn down if they have been in there for some time.


If you buy, quarantine in a tank without substrate for 4 weeks and add a course of Melafix. This will ensure they don't pick up any infections and help the barbels re-grow.

Ok, they are in a tank with fine gravel, but are already fairly large and have been there for at least 2 months now, people only buying 1 or 2. They have 6 left, and I was intending buying the group. I have sand in my tank.

I've seen the fish they are with attacking them, I think they should have quite long ones by now.

Only hting that puts me off, are they always wild caught, do you know?

Yes they will regrow. Yes they are wild caught. Do buy at least six, they should be kept in groups.
