Hi everyone,
I have seen many wonderful pictures and Ideas on here for girl tanks...I was just making this new topic to get some ideas and help from everyone on here who either has a girl tank or just has some great Ideas...I have been looking into making one...was thinking of a 20gal but I really would like something incredibly cheap...(being a starving college student and all haha) So if anyone could help me out that would be great...right now I have 4 females and hopefully some more soon...so please post away...

thanks in advance :)

I currently have 3 living in a 30g with my laregest syno. They get on real well and I hope to add to them soon. And being that Ollie (one of my boys) is making bubble nests and has the kindest temperament ever seen in a betta, I may well breed from him. But not for a few months as the girls are still rather young.
They actually enjoy playing in the current at one end but have plenty of space with no current. Always worth having floating plants or tall plants that have fronds floating across some of the surface. As with the boys they like to rest in them and sleep there.
Mine are also rather fond of eating the catfish pellets and go down to the sand to find it.
Suggestion wise I can only say give them space and plants. Although they often spend time together it's good to have the option of getting well away too.
I picked the tank up pretty cheap from ebay. I also run an internal aswell as an external from it (I prefer to over rather than underfilter). Although they can cope with less then perfect conditions they will flourish in good ones.
Eventually the tank will have a few more girls, a couple more smaller types of catfish and a small school of danios.
Good luck with your girls. Personally I'd suggest doing what feels right for your fish. After all, not all are as passive as mine and not all would feel happy playing with a fish 8 times their size!!

Miss Dib Dabbs - thanks for the suggestion :) I somewhat have an Idea on what I would like to do..I just dont want to be missing anything crucial... :) want the best for my girlies.... :)

DaSauce - That has to be the most darling picture I have ever seen haha its so precious hahahaha I LOVE it :p

I shall try and get piccies of my girls sometime soon. They are truly beautiful.
Ah and make sure there's a cover over the filter pipe so they don't get sucked in! That would be beyond tragic!
Hugs,
P.

here is my girly tank... 20 gal long, with sand/flourite substrate and light to moderate planting and some driftwood.

Awwwww. I have to confess to finding some more ladies at the place I get my live food from today. I was there with the view of picking up a couple of female endlers for my male and ended up with two females to add to the other three. :*) *Slaps self* I really must behave better. Now I can only buy one more for stock levels of the tank and I really want a green lady so that may take some time.

That is a great looking tank newfishes I really like it :)

Miss Dib Dabbs haha I find myself doing it alot I try to avoid the fish store at all costs unless i really need something haha otherwise I end up bring home more fish...not that staying away from the fish store really stops me from getting fish hahaha

I was wondering if anyone has anyone has any suggestions on gravel or substrate...what have you all tried...whats the easiest to clean...what just all around worked for you and what didnt...?? Thanks :)

I absolutely hate washing gravel. It keeps me from setting up tanks. So I have taken to using Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate in my planted aquariums, as well as First Layer Pure Laterite (only use an ounce per usg so easy to rinse) to mix with sterilized sand--I use large grain building sand, cheap cheap cheap. In unplanted aquariums I use Estes Spectra Stone--doesn't need washing either.

A plus to Eco-Complete is that it contains bacteria, so no cycling. Or so they claim. So far it seems to work.

I get it all online except the sand. It is much less online than in the lfs--even with shipping.

i gave away all of my girls except for one but i would really like to start up another girl tank now that i have settled into my apartment.

here are some old pics of one of my tanks (in the early stage of plant growth). this one was eventually upgraded to a 20 long. it sat next to another female 20 long so the girls could still see and flare at each other. wish i had some pics. :/
