Gill holes

You know when a betta flares out their gills? *like the picture on BettaMomma's avatar* Well, Orchid was looking at me, and flared out his gills, and I just saw that he has a small, maybe the size of a pinhead, hole on his right side of the gill. Is this normal?

It's not necessarily normal, but it probably isn't doing him any harm
I'd add some salt to his water just incase
