well, if they aren't true giants, then they're certainly the largest bettas i've ever seen!

i stopped at the pet store on the way home from work to get some biospira, and of course had to at least glance at the tanks. sooooo many gorgeous cts and vts, but i managed to resist. then, on the way out the door, i spotted a flash of something green in a dimly lit tank. looked like a HUGE plakat...and it was a HUGE plakat! the label said "short tail betta $7.99." i got rather excited as the employee fished him out for me, until i noticed an even bigger plakat in the tank next door. as she fished that one out so i could compare, i noticed a third ginormous plakat in another tank just above the first two. that one appeared slightly smaller, so i left him be. i got both of the big ones, i'd estimate them to be about 4 inches and 3.75 inches. for size reference:

it's a plain glass tank, came with a little clip on light. i picked it up at petco for $14.99 specifically to use for taking pictures.

this is how i set it up: there's white paper underneath the tank, and a fluorescent desk lamp on either side. one of the lamps is a gooseneck, and i position it so the light is *directly* over the top of the tank. i put a piece of white paper behind the tank and take a custom white balance. depending on the color of the fish, i'll either leave the paper there, replace it with a black sheet of paper, use a different background, or use nothing. sometimes you have to test all of the above to find the best result. i've been taking pictures with no flash, ISO 400, aperture anywhere from f/4.0 to f/5.6, and shutter speeds ranging from 1/40s to 1/80s. i'll also put another betta in a cup just out of sight of the camera for the betta being photographed to use as a "flare buddy."

i know i know :*) but i've wanted giants for forever, and they were right under my nose for $7.99  :fun:

What cool names to go wuth such cool bettas! I wish my lfs had cool things. Or things that weren't half dead. You know.

yikes! i found titan half dried out on the rug when i came home from dinner yesterday!!

i thought he was dead but when i went to pick him up he started flopping around, so i quickly tossed him back into his tank (the top of which is now all but hermetically sealed). he seems to be just fine today, but boy did he give me a scare!

Very nice. If they're full-grown, it's likely they're half-giants!
