I'm working on getting pics up of Zeus our new big guy, but has anyone had experience with giant bettas? If so what are typical size ranges. Zeus is currently 5 inches in length from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail, with his body making up nearly 4 inches of that length.

Post a pic, with somehting in it to show size (like a dollar bill or ruler or something)

5 inches total does sound big, but I don't think it qualifies as GIANT. Where did you get him? How old is he?

There was a thread on this a few days ago. I'm trying to do this from memory and mine isn't all that good but here goes, I'll do my best. You measure from their eye to the end of the body, do not include the fins. A half-giant betta is considered to be over 3.5 inches and a giant at least 7 inches. You said you just got him so he could still be growing and be a juvie giant. If he is full grown he is most likely a half-giant.

BTW - Kentucky girl here, born and raised right outside Louisville. :)

Edit: There is a man named Jim Sonnier who has been doing some work with giants. I don't have his web address handy, but he is very well known and I'm sure you could google for him and get some great info.

Digital camera batteries are charging as we speak....er type. He actually came from a spawn of my mothers, but all of these bettas were of normal size. Only Zeus a female named maze and another male named dumbo for his incredibly large swim fins seem to possess such outstanding size. Zeus is currently 5 months old and this morning after doing an accurate measurement his body is just a shade past 4.5 inches long. This is without the tail fin which adds just a shade over 7 inches to his total length. He is not only long, but also broad and just an unusually large betta in general. He seems to have no health problems eats fine is very active and building a bubble nest. Hope to have some pics posted in the next couple of hours if possible.

My guess would be half giant, especially since he has a couple of large sibs. He probably has the gene in his line somewhere. :) BTW he's a beauty.

Working on getting some new pics of zeus up tomorrow that will hopefully display his size better. Check back soon.

Yep, looks like a half-giant to me too. :) And a beautiful one at that...

Can't wait to see new pics. :)

Personally..just from looking at the pictures it looks like a regular sized betta with pictures that have been taken real close up. From judging comparison to the size of objects around the fish (i.e the plants in the background..I have one just like that.. and by judging the size between this fish and my VTs and the plant) the fish just looks like a mature, full-grown VT. Some full grown VTs are pretty big bodied.

I'm not saying I don't believe you that he's 5" long in the body..but I'd really need to see it with a ruler for a correct comparison.

I don't think it's part Giant personally...Still a pretty fish though.

Actually Zeus is 4.5 inches in the body with a measurement of very near seven inches from nose to tail. He is currently 5 months old and the pictures were take today. Certainly I understand why it is difficult to imagine a betta this large and this is why we decided to post him. We have been breeding and keeping bettas for the better part of 20 years now and never once witnessed a fish with the size Zeus has. Not only is he longer than he should normally be as an adult much less as a 5 month old fish, but his width and the size of his head and fins are remarkably large. I think perhaps some of you have gotten the wrong idea. We haven't posted him to claim he is a giant, but rather to gauge the response to his size and see if anyone does have any bettas that are comparable. If you will pay careful attention to the picture of Zeus and Fireball you can notice a significant difference in size. Zeus is 7 months younger than fireball and nearly 3 times his size. Of the spawn that he came from two others are nearly as large as he is, however their finnage and width leaves some things to be desired. The pictures with Zeus and fireball do indeed look like Zeus is much closer than Fireball to the camera lens. In all reality however Fireball was much closer. I apologize for the lack of good photos, but this fish really refuses to show off for the camera. He is inherently curious only when food is present, and then his action and motion are too ferocious to gather a good photo or two. We will try to post better pictures with a ruler or a soda bottle or something in a day or two in order to show his size better.
