its the name of the gourami. its called a giant gourami which really only grows 4 inches. its also called a banded gourami. thats why i put giant/banded gourami

4 inches is really small, my gourami is a proper giant and hes around 16 inches. you have the names really messed up. none of the giants have bands on them so there is no way yours can be a giant gourami.

Jayson, it can!
Its common names that are causing the problem;
The common name giant gourami is applied by various literatures and web-sources and within the trade to both colisa fasciata (banded/giant gourami) AND the osphronemus goramy (giant/common gourami).
It may be a little outdated, these days the colisa more often than not reffered to as banded and osphronemus as giant.
Its all (as far as i can tell) interlinked, in the fishkeeping days of yore, colisa species were the most commonly kept Gourami, the largest of these being colisa fasciata, hence the giant tag, see for yourself;

To me both are valid, but useless, only the latin names (to me, and quite obviously) are of any use.
Common names, simply, suck.
:nod:

well the ones i am refering to are the 4 inch colorful ones. Anyway will they eat shrimp/frogs

i still refuse to called the colisa fasciata a giant. 4 inches is tiny...my parrots are bigger. i hate how they can even be called giants, comparing them with a clearly bigger species, the osphronemus.

i suppose the lil guy can eat shrimp and frogs, but dont gouramis usually prefer veggies? i know mines does.

Anyhow, i agree to some extent, personally i do my best to use latin names because realistically common names are easily invented and mean very little, but;
Have either of you guys got a picture of your giant ( :shifty: ) gourami for my ID thread?

I'm sure i've seen good pics osphronemus goramy pics from JasonSkillz before althought i haven't noticed any pics of colisa fasciata as yet from matt1713....
:dunno:
Any help to prevent confusion such as this from happening again?

ill get a picture if i get it but i want to first make sure its shrimp safe.

you can use my pic of my gourami if you like, but then again...people might get confused since its all pink. i would still like you to use my pic for the thread :D

Pic and credit has been added, is it dyed?
:eek:
( i don't know a great deal/anything about giant gourami)

Any input on the thread? Additions you think would make it more useful?
