My ghost shrimp have been doing lovely in the bottom of my tank keeping it very clean. I did have the one instance of the biggest one attacking my balloon mollie, but that's life. Anyway........................They have started keeling over! The water is fine. Everything is normal. No real changes. I did a partial water change two days ago, but added the normal chemicals and the levels are all good. WHY????

what do you mean by keeling over? do u mean putting ther tails under their boddy? cause mine do that all the time, i think it is natural.

I think she means they're dying.
It could be a change in water temp that is killing them.
I'm really not sure without anymoer info on your tank params.

What I do know is I've never had success keeping ghosy shrimp for very long.
others have, hopefully someone else will be able to help you out a bit more trish

Is the temp in the tank more than 26C? Ghost shrimps like the water quite cool 22-25C and quite often die when it gets hot. They also like loads of flow and high oxygen water, so increasing the flow might help. Good Luck :)

It has been extremely hot here this week (right around 100F). They were doing SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good! They even had eggs! They were great at helping to keep my tank clean! In a community tank, I even had one baby survive to a decent size, now they've died!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All parameters are in order (nitrites, nitrates, ph, and ammonia are all in safe levels and staying were they have for the last three months now).

How do you keep an aquarium cool??? My house is set at 74F. I looked at the temp of the tank and it was at 80F (my mollies are happy). The oxygen flow (water flow) is good as is the cleaness of the filter.

heh, I'm having the same problem keeping my tank cool, 'specially my goldie tank.

I use frozen bottles of dechlorinated water to keep my tanks cool.
(friggen freezer is full of water bottles, the wife is loosen it on me).

I also use fans to blow over the surface of the water, causing the water to evaporate, evaporation helps cool the water temp.

A couple of my tanks I use those car fans that plug into your cigarette lighter, I wired them up to a 12 volt adapter and mount the just above the filters so the air is blowing on the water coming out of them.

It's been brutally hot here, mostly its the humidity thats killin us.
Some days we're hitting 30-34 celcius with a humidex anywhere between 50-75%.
When you go outide its like walking into a sauna!

it's a hard one, your fish need it warm, the shrimps need it cool, I think your best bet is to find a tropical species of shrimp you like, that's used to warm temps so you won't have to worry about the temp. in the summer.

Any recommendations? I just got these ghost shrimp because (1) the kids liked them when they saw them, (2) they were SUPER CHEAP [$0.23], and (3) I thought if they didn't make it it wouldn't be a big deal. Unfortunately, they became one of my favorite things in the tank. They are FANTASTIC about getting the bits that fall into the rocks too!

Instead of shrimp, you could get some malaysian trumpet snails.
They're great for cleaning up the tank.
During the day they'll burrow into the substrate, clean and release gas build ups under the substrate.
At night they'll come out and clean the surface of your gravel and the glass.
Be warned though, they breed like mad and you'll have to get rid of some from time to time.
Also, if you have plants in your tank they'll leave them alone and just stick to dead and decaying plant matter and left over foods.

Nope. NO snails. Don't EVER want ANY kind of snails. They are ugly and worse than rabbits. I like the shrimp because they are cool to watch crawl around and climb on the plants, etc.

Well, hopefully you can figure out whats going on with your shrimp. :D
I know for myself, I gave up on the shrimp and went with the snails.
They arent the most striking thing ti watch in an aquarium though, your right. :/

I have about 4 ghost shrimp in my tank and they are the greatest addition I have ever made, my biggest being about 2 inches long. They swim and clean and eat and its just great. An addition I think that truly finished my tank off and that kept most of my fish and shrimp happy are live aquatic plants. I have a few elodea plants and anacharis plants and my shrimp thrive all over them and molt and swim and I truly think aquatic plants make the best addition for an aquarium, shrimp, or no shrimp...but adding aquatic plants I think may help.
