i have two balloon mollies i want to get a creature next and i cant decide which to get i also have some questions
1) which is easier to breed in 78 degrees water that is some what hard?
2) which is easier to take care of as far as hardyness ie: eats fish food and isnt fragile?
3) are any of them a sexual or do they both need a mate?
4) how hard is it to tell the difference of male and female?

any thing else would be much apreciated :D

1) I doubt you're gonna get either to breed - but I'd say Ghost Shrimp, froggies are very hard to breed in a tank. Shrimp will sometimes lay eggs, but they don't always survive as youngsters.
2) Shrimp here too.... they're definately easier because you don't have to feed them any special food, they just survive on leftovers. They're not always hardy though, frogs may beat them in that department (at least mine have).
3) Both need a mate. :)
4) For shrimp you can't really tell unless the female has eggs, and for frogs it's also difficult - sometimes a mature male has small bumps behind his front arms.

go for the shrimp. chances of them breeding will be better at least than the frogs. if you've ever sat and watched the adfs at the lfs, they really don't move around a lot, but ghost shrimp are a bit more active, and i personally like more active fish (the "feeder" ghosts in my puffer tank, none of which were ever eaten by the way and have now grown to be great little bottom clean up crew, dart around more than the puffers or gobies!!! sometimes i find myself watching the shrimp instead of hte actual fish in the tank), though frogs are absolutely adorable. what size tank do you have? would you have room for a couple of each?

i have a ten gallon i have 2 balloon mollies male and female and i was going to get another female but she had babies and no pet store will take them except one that will take them as a donation i dont pay taxes.

my tank(in future)
3 balloon mollies
4-6 cardinal tetras
however many non fish

I've got both in a 10G. I like the shrimp better hands down. They are always on the go. They are always scouring the tank for left over food. One will come to the surface and let you hand feed him flakes. They are great. And as far as I know they don't count in the inch per gallon rule. They are dirt cheap also about three for a dollar here. I had one that was pregnant but I never saw any of the babies. I think them must have been eaten.
I find the frog hard to take care of. The one that I have will only eat freeze dried blood worms or occasionally brine shrimp. He will not come to the surface to feed either. Every few days when I get worried that he hasn't eaten I take a pair of tongs and pinch some blood worms in them and put them right in front of his face. He will eat them but it is a pain. This may just be this one particular frog but I wouldn't get another.

I have 2 ADFs in my 5 gallon hex tank.
They are pretty cool to watch when they feel like moving around.
Mine are nuts, they swim to the top to get a gulp of air,
then dives down to the bottom often crashing into the sand.
Then try to crawl under something so that they don't float to the top
from the big gulp of air.

Anyone know where I can find Shrimp in NYC?
I looked everywhere, no luck so far.
Also looking for FW Dwarf Puffers.

TIA :D

Is there a pestsmart there? My local petsmart gets ghost shrimp every monday. You could try ebay. They often have shrimp and snails. Good luck.

Answer to your questions (African Dwarf Frogs):
1) 78 is fine for African D Frogs. Water Hardness - hey, what do they care! THEY DON'T HAVE TO BREATH THE WATER!
2) My African’s eat flake food (and I feed them bloodworms too).
3) Get two frogs and one will change its sex (this is true) so they can mate.
4) The larger of the two frogs will be the female. When matting, the male will be the one "holding on". Other than that, there is no good clue as to what sex is which.

I have had Ghost Shrimp, and they never last as long as my African Frogs.

I love my froggies! I dunno if they are african, they're small, like maybe 1 inch and they're mottled brown. They are so cute tho!!!! I would get them over shrimp.
Just my opinion!

Adfs cant survive on flake food alone - most wont touch it. If you have other fish they wont get to the food in time either, so you have to hand feed them, which can be a nuisance as they are expert hiders. That said they are adorable.

Shrimp are much easier to care for.
