Ok, I'm treating my other fish for ick with some salt. But my question is this, if and when I get a ghost shrimp, can they handle brackish water? Since I know platties can handle it. Anyway, I read that some like it and that they might do better, but wanted to ask here to be sure. If they can be, how much salt should I add to a 10 gal tank that would be safe for all fish and the shrimp?

Hi Sharlene1385 :)

Please wait until the ich is completely cured and your water has been freshened before adding any more fish or other creatures to your tank.

Ghost Shrimp are freshwater creatures. Here's a link with some good information about them:

Oh, no I was waiting. I just wanted to know. Since I hear that they can be in slightly brackish water, I did read that, but I wanted to make certain that they would be ok if they had a bit of salt in. I mean, if I needed to cure anything else and used salt....would it kill them?

According to this site, some are more native to brackish waters. It makes sense as most likely there are several species or sub species of Ghost Shrimp.

We have 3-5 ghost shrimp (I saw 3-5 because we haven't ssen 2 recently). Kept hearing about adding salt a putting in 1 tablespoon per 10 gals. On the advice of my LFS I cut this in half ( 1/2 per 10 gal) due to my fish and the shrimp and have not seen any problems.

ok thanks. Yeah I had heard 1 tablespoon per 5 gal. Guess you just have to watch it. Maybe the half would be the best, but since I have a 10 gal, when I get one, I'll just do 1 tablespoon- shouldn't be too much or too little. Thank you so much.

If you're treating for ich (short term salt adding), almost all fish can handle it well. I added 1 tblspoon/5 gallons to my 120 as listed below and every fish survived. It also cured up the ich. Don't forget to turn your heater up and make your filter splash for more aeration!

Good luck, ich sucks:)

you should probably not be adding aquarium salt to your tank everytime you add water. i used to do this but was then told it is useless-especially if the fish develop something that could be resistant to the salt. i do add it to my bettas water though.
