just got a gnf and he is hanging around the filter alot and not really moving about is this normall

Yeah, they do that a lot.
They're nocturnal and tend to rest hidden away during the day, though they can be active during the day.
Your signature doesn't show a tank size. I take it you're aware they get quite large? Up to 18" long.

He's hanging round the filter as it's probably the darkest place in the tank. BGKF do not like light and so you should provide somewhere for him to hide during the day. I use a 4" wide and 18" long piece of tubing.

Im assuming you are aware that these fish grow to 18-20" and are predatory

But if you want to see him, put a glass jam jar at the front of the tank and he will think you cant see him as there blind but he can sense walls around him. very good fish
