Getting my crown-tail to open up

I recently bought a crown-tail and I'm wondering what I can do to get him to open up. I've seen how beautiful they can look when they open their fins, but my betta has yet to do that. What conditions should I meet before it'll open up?

Good water conditions and a varied diet to start with. Also hold a mirror up to his tank and he should display nicely for you Just don't leave it there all day, don't want the poor guy to be ticked off all day long

With my newest, I just let him settle in for a day, the next evening I brought out a mirror, and he flared away.

My previous two, though, flared a lot the moment they got home (even at the seller before I bought them). I put them beside each other so they had reason to.
