Hey everyone, I'll be getting my 55 gallon tank earlier than I thought. I had originally planned to get a 60 gallon, but after looking at the 2 side by side at Petsmart today, the 55 is longer and is what I really want. My Walmart has a 55 gallon kit that comes with everything for $150. I'll pick it up since it's a great deal. I'll be adding a Penguin Bio-Wheel 350 though as a 2nd filter. Will the filter that comes with it plus the Bio-Wheel be an okay combination together?

As for stocking, I think I have it down to this for now:

2 Platys
8-10 Dalmation Mollys
4 Angelfish
2 Dwarf Gouramis
4 Clown Loaches - for now they'll be housed here until I get another larger tank.
8-10 Cory Cats

If the livebearers dont live, which for some reason I always have a hard time with, I'll switch them out with some different fish. Any opinions on what I could replace them with?

If the livebearers don't make it, I was thinking a small school of silver dollars. Would they be okay in this tank, or would they be too big?

I fancy a school of these :

At the mo, so yes, they would look lovely in your tank.

I seem to be recommending them alot.

I actually really like those..........what are they called? I'm not sure if they have those at my Petsmart or LFS. I was also thinking of a school of Zebra Danios, but I like those you posted more!

Oooooooohhh

night_market, what type of fish is that? It's absolutely crazy looking, I like!!!

aparker2005, if the angel fish form a pair, would you take back the others(angel fish)? I would think the two filters combined would be enough filtration. I've noticed the filters that come with the walmart kits don't move water nearly as well as the bio- wheels do, but again, they should do fine together.

good luck with the new tank!!

Well, I had only 4 Angelfish in my 29 gallon tank before they all died, and my 2 Gold ones formed a pair. They never messed with the other 2, and I've never had angelfish aggression problems. But, if I do, I will take them back!

As for the filters, I will eventually switch out the walmart filter for another penguin bio wheel.

Will they nip angels fins?

Would it also be good to have a few floating fake or live plants? I"ve never had floating plants but the way some of you have them in your tanks on here, they look amazing!

I hope not! I want them with my angels...

"Aquarium: A high oxygen level is a prerequisite, particularly if the water temperature is on the high side. It's fairly peaceful and non-territorial and can be mixed with most tropical community fish. However, there are reports of some specimens being a little waspish (these may be Puntius chalukudiensis). Keep in a group. Use a tight fitting lid as this fish can be a little jumpy at times."

Nevermind about Silver Dollars, they get too large.

Would Black Skirt Tetras be a good choice? I dont care for too many tetras, and they are the only ones that appeal to me. What about some swordtails?

I love swordtails and a 55 would be perfect for a group of them... Just remember they're livebearers and with a tank that size you will have babies that survive! They're great fish though and are easily one of my favorites.
