Since I'm moving my betta to a 5 gallon tank, I was wondering if that was enough room to get him a friend? I know ADF can do well with bettas, but I was wondering what other types of fish? And would that be enough room?

Thanks!

I would divide the tank and get another male betta to keep him company. They seem to like each other's company and showing off to each other on who's the biggest stud of the tank. I wouldn't put any other species with a betta though, unless you just need to, then it's on a fish to fish basis based on each betta's personality.

I concur - I'd never put a betta with anything, except maybe a froggy.
My betta boy moved into his new 5 G tank today and he's having a ball floating around in the currents in there right now.

Oh, FYI - he has discovered several places in the tank where he can go to get out of the current. :)

Ok, thanks!

Where could I find a divider? THe tank I have doesn't have one, and would 2.5 gallons be ok for both of the bettas? I was upgrading him to a five gallon for him to have more room. But, I might just leave him by himself, my mom doesn't seem so happy about the whole idea of more pets. :D

I kept my male betta with some ghost shrimp and they did okay. He would occassionaly flare at them but nothing more. I just made sure there were hiding places for them. Is the tank filtered and heated?

Wow I just put Tony and Kyle in a tank,Val is now in the 20 gall. These boys love showing off their finnage :p

I think bettas like to be able to see other fish, but they don't like them sharing their water space. I wouldn't reccomend putting anything else in with him; its hard to make enough cover for them to avoid each other in just 5 gallons.

They won't get the chance to breed if they are living in the same tank all the time though, because they'll fight and kill each other. The topic has come up a lot. And we don't need more veiltails in the world.

I don't think Yeevia was serious, so lighten up. He just jokes and he knows you guys get your panties in a twist when he says things like that, so now it's just a natural response for him to give you a hard time.

No, no more veiltails in the world, but he could get a female to keep on the other side of the divider to be his friend. They like each others company and show off quite frequently to one another. What type of 5 gallon is it? They sell some pre-made dividers at the pet stores, or you could come up with your own using plastic mesh sheets for crafts like at Wal-Mart or Michael's. No, I don't think 2 bettas for that volume would be too much. You do not want to house them together though where they get to one another, they would and could kill one another.

TBH companions are mainly to give something else to look at besides the betta. Not that bettas aren't interesting enough, of course, but theres nothing like the novelty of having a froggy in your tank :)
