My neigbor wants a betta and would like to know what size tank ypu'd recommend for it since I wouldn't be able to go over there alot since my mom doesn't like me being around people that smoke cigarettes.

I would reccomend a 1 gal at least. Although 1.5 is better, as is 2 gal etc. But some bettas can be nervous in bigger tanks.. like 10+ gals. I have my two boys in seperate 1.5 gallon Kritter-Keeper sort of tanks. They always have bubblenests going and seem fine. It depends on the personality of the betta. Here's my set-up anyway:

No problem. :) Soon your neighbour will be a betta addict like us... :sly:

I'd actually recommend a 5g.

It's slightly less care than a 1g, if they are the sort who are unfamiliar with fish keeping, it has a great deal more room for our betta friends, AND, it is the smallest size available that will support a dialed heater. It's my new recommended minimum, for me and mine. :D If I know of anyone who is getting themselves a single betta, I immedately hop to the 5g mark and stress that anything less requires honest, daily, attention.

It's also only 8" wider than your standard, 1g "drum style" bowl (depending on which 5g you buy). That means that it's easy to fit where a person wants them to fit, and those 8" provide greatly appreciated swimming space.

Thanks I'll call the lps and ask them how much a 5g would cost with the lid, filter, and heater.

What are the dimensions of those kritter keepers just out of interest? I wanted to see how many i can fit on my new shelving unit (which hasnt arrived yet lol).

My critter keeper holds about 3 gallons. I'll measure it for you as soon as I can find my tape measure :)

Since this person is paying for it she doesn't want to spend much money so could you all tell me how to make a DIY lid and light, well actually just need a lid to keep the betta from jumping out then I'll get a desk lamp that can clamp onto the side of the tank.

My 1.5 gals measure: 10" x 5" x 5". Lol, Rio likes the ruler..

It's very kind of you to do all this for her...

A simple DIY lid can be made from photocopier film: cut it to the size of the lid, punch a good few air holes in it and then secure it with clear stickytape. You could probably make prettier ones, but this one works well, it's quick and as DIY as you can get. :p ;)

What about plastic canvas then take a permant marker and paint it black? Also if I got a filter for the 5g would it need to be cycled?

Plastic canvas sounds good, although I wouldn't use permanent marker: the fumes could be deadly. Synirr recently had an accident with shower soothers - vapour releasing things - and lost two beautiful boys. :(

I don't think it would need cycling (the tank)... if there's only one betta you should be fine.

www.petco.com is having a sale on their 5g Minibows, $35 for everything, along with a coupon code for free shipping within the USA (there's also a percentage off coupon, but I always save more money when I go for the free shipping). This'd get her a tank, a lighted hood, a slightly useless packet of food, and a filter.

I keep oogling it and informing myself that I don't actually require another tank.

Also, I am about 90% sure that if you have a local petco, that they match this price. I vaguely remember being on another forum, and having a petco employee talk about their $35 sale.

Well I have to keep this under$20-$30 because she doesn't always have money.
