Well after some post readings I decided to transfer from a 10-gal to 29-gal and have a few questions.

I currently have a Penguin Bio-Wheel 125GPH on my 10 gallon... how will it do in the 29 gallon? Should I upgrade to a higher throughput ?

If not.. when I setup my 29gal and fill it with dechlorinized water then move the filter over and start it up can I add fish because of the existing bacteria on the bio-wheel filter? Or will I have to cycle it again?

Okay and seriously folks... 29gal or a 20 gal? Because the price differnce is like 30 dollars.

Thanks in advanced!

As big as you can afford and I doubt that a 10 gallon filter is going to do a 30 adequatley but it depends on your stocking and maintenance.

125gph is less than 500lph and I would try to go for 800-1000lph IMO.

I have 2 of the 125's on mine, Marineland states it can adequately filter up to 30 galllons but I always over filter. I put 2 on mine. I also have 2 of the 330's on my 55 gallon. they say one 330 is good for 70 gallons but does it hurt to have 4 bios wheels going on a 55? I dont think so, I would defintelay just pick up another 125 in addition to the existing one.

i agree. go for the bigger tank. if you cant afford the extra filter at first run it with the one you have and when you can afford to buy the extra. just watch your water and do extra cleanings if neccesary. also there have been a few threads about upgrading and moving tanks that have great advice about switching filter media and gravel you might want to look at.

I run a Penguin 170 on my 29g, along with a Mini when the quarantine tank isn't in use. The 125 is marginally adequate for your new tank. Do not overstock.

I'd just buy a second 125 or another similar sized filter and run them simultaneously, the added benefit being insurance for when one fails or when you change/rinse one filter's media.

Personally I'm going to put an emperor 400 on my 29 but then I'm planning on a chiclid tank.

Thanks for all the info... yea I can't afford the new filter yet so I will be using my 125 until I can afford the 330 or something along the lines of a 330.

Is Canister filter better then BioWheel setup?

yes a lot of people like them, as for getting a 330, try www.petsolutions.com or www.petwarehouse.com

www.bigalsonline.com usually has good prices as well. Though in this case they're the same as the www.petwarehouse.com which is actually Dr. Fosterandsmith.

tghe penguin 125 is just barely enough for that tank. and if the tank is fully stocked you'll likely have issues since it only has the power to turn over that tank 4 times/hour. if you don't add anymore fish once you move everything over you should be OK. I just would not add any fish(beyond whats in the 10 already) till you add a larger filter.

okay, thanks for the info! Maybe I can save a little more and get a canister filter, any ones you people like in particular?
