I am looking into breeding these fish, but have a few questions about my water. The water out of my tap reads as this.

hardness 160 ppm
ph: 7.8

I have read that this will not work with this fish. I had these fish before, and they did fine. I had a breeding pair, but I could never get the fry to survive. They would live for about a week then die off. It the hardness of my water to blame for that. Please let me know if anyone on here has had sucess with water conditions like this. Thanks

I breed mine in 7.5 PH and anywhere from 4-6GH. Not sure how german hardness relates to ppm.

Anyhow ph doesn't seem to be as important as hardness. Once eggs have been laid, I've also found that adding 3% hydrogen peroxide, at a ratio of 1ml to 10 gallons, is vital. The H2O2 keeps the eggs from fungusing.
