I have apair of German rams and they have been acting wierd lately. Can they have begun spawning? They would go to their favorite coner and hide, then go on my big rock ornament and they start to shake with their heads to tail and it looks like they are attacking the big rock?

They began spawning. They live in a community tank. Should I take out my other fishes. are they going to be a treat to the babies?

And in my tank I have
2 german rams :D (my last 2 fishes)
4 guppies
1 neon tetra (might have to get rid off or get more)
5 gold/albino tetras (don't know their real name)
2 rasboras
1 rosy Barb
40 gallon tank

You could take out the parents and the eggs out of the tank into a different tank. But they will defend their eggs from the other fish so I think it would be ok not to move them and just leave them. They need a low PH for the eggs to hatch, they will just get fungus on them with hard water and not hatch.

Ok i'll leave them. thanks for replying. no seemed to want to help. hehe :X if i moved the eggs and the parents, wouldn't they disown the eggs since the area is gonna look diff.??

I am going through the same thing as you are. The two Germans I have just laid eggs last night. I was told be the LFS to move the eggs to a seperate tank since I have a community tank. As the other fish might eat them. I noticed that the two did a good job of defending off the smaller fish in the tank, but I was afraid that my plecostomis wich is about 5" would just barg his way in there and eat the eggs. Let me know how yours do.
I moved mine into a 10 gallon tank all by them selfs. I left the parents in the main tank.

joey you are going to have to get the parents in with the eggs, they need to fan the eggs and they look after them. They will just get some fungus on them and they won't hatch. The parents will take care of them after they hatch.

I am not sure about them disowning the eggs. I had mine in a 20 gallon by themselves so I didn't have to worry about that. Now my male ram is in the community tank waiting for some female company. I won't have to worry about any fry cause of my water situation so they can lay eggs all they want and then eat them when they realize they are not hatching. It does not take long for the eggs to hatch, I hear. Keep an eye on them, you might be surprised to see fry in the tank sooner than you think, unless the water is like mine then you might not have success. If you are serious about breeding them and it doesn't work out this time, test your Ph, Kh and then I think it is peat that you put in your filter to lower the Ph in the tank. Then maybe you will succeed in getting fry next time.

UPDATE
The eggs look good, about 80% of about 100 eggs have black specs in them.

How are your rams doing Bleechme? Any eggs yet

 Their gone. I think it's either the parents or my other fish. But tell me about yours ok! I'm interested! :-( :-( I think I'm going to move my pair into theor own tank so there won't be any distractions like in the community tank. My this was thir first time. I didn't think that they'd lay eggs yet because they are still kinda small.

What do you mean your water condition is not going to hacth your eggs *love cichlids*???

A lot of people say that ram eggs will not hatch in high ph levels. Well I have really high ph levels like 7.8-8.0 so far everything looks good. I guess I will have to wait and see what happens. I will try and post some pictures tonight if I get the chance.

About your missing eggs I would say that another fish in the tank ate them. That is why I was told to get the eggs out of my community tank. I am really excited about this. I can't wait to see them hatch. I will keep you informed.

Thanks for repling my question and....
YES! please keep me informed! :look: I want to see your success after my loss. I also read in your post http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=126382 that we should move the eggs and the parents to a smaller tank. My question for you is, did you do that and did the parents keep taking care of the eggs even though they are in a different(unknown) area?

Good luck with your fish!
I would love to see some pics!

They will-but MUCH lower hatch rate, and much higher mortality.......

Well all of the fry have died. I think I know what the problem was too. I was treating ich at the time, using the salt method. Would this kill the fry? Or was it my 7.8-8.0 ph. Hard to tell with the coloring charts on my test kit. I know it is in that rang though.

I didn't put the parents in with the fry this time. I think that I am going to add the parents in with them next, and see what happens. Unless someone who has had success breeding rams tells me different.

I loved watching these rams breeding so much that I think I am going to get a 20 gallon and set it up just for germans, with a small school of cardinals in a planted tank. I will see if I can find room, and get some extra money for this project.

NEVER MIND. I DO HAVE FRY LEFT. I GOT HOME LAST NIGHT, AND WAS GOING TO CLEAN THE TANK OUT. LOOKED IN THERE, AND WOW. I STILL HAVE ABOUT 50 LITTLE FRY. I THOUGHT THEY ALL DIED. I GUESS THEY WHERE JUST ALL LAYING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK. BUT HEY, I FED THEM LAST NIGHT, AND THEY ALL SEEMED TO EAT THE FOOD. THEY WHERE ALL SWIMMING AROUND IN THE TANK WHEN I WENT TO BED. I ALSO CHECKED THE WATER PERAMETERS, AND EVERY THING CHECKED OUT GOOD. I HOPE THEY MAKE IT. I WILL GET PICTURES ONCE THEY GET BIG ENOUGH TO SEE WITH A CAMERA. RIGHT NOW THEY ARE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A PIN HEAD.

:D Your so lucky!! now you'll soon have a full tank of Germans for your project! My female died about 2 days ago. :-( . The male is doing god though. I might have to go get a female agian. Huh. 3rd ram I lost.

Same thing happened to me, my male is still alive but the female died last summer. Still have no female for Romeo, he needs a Juliet  Hopefully soon, don't have a petstore around here that have females or even any rams at all.

Sorry to hear about your losses. If these fish make it through. I can sell them to you. I can get pictures up of the parents. The male has beautiful colors, and the female gets beautiful colors when she is feeding or gets excited about anything. I know it will be awhile, but let me know.
