Last night my gf bought me a steel blue butterfly HM for my birthday... and there's a label outside of the tank saying "Steel Blue BF HM GENO"... What's GENO?

The shopper said that GENO means the tail can grow bigger and even become Super Delta... that's what GENO means...

But my friend told me that GENO means that it's pure breed... the mother and father are both HM....

can someone help me with the TRUE meaning of GENO?i really wanna know what's the meaning of GENO...

Um...... justto clear something up, Halfmoons, are bigger than super deltas, super detals are like hms but not completely 180 degrees I think geno means pure bred

LOL... that darn guy!! ... he told me that most of the fish in his shop can become bigger than HM and become super delta... he fooled me again :S

thanks for your information Wisperian...

BTW... about my betta... does that mean that i can get a HM when i breed him with a female ( other than HM )....
or should i breed him only with a HM female?

what will i get when i breed him with CT female... ?(i'm thinking of buying a yellow CT female... saw her at the same shop yesterday)

"Geno" means the fish carries the gene for that trait. So in other words, that fish may not display the butterfly trait, but carries it and if spawned, it could show up in the offspring. So if say, a halfmoon and a halfmoon were bred, and produced super deltas, the offspring could be sold as "halfmoon geno". Hope that makes sense. :)

Geno is short for genotype, which is the set of genes the fish carries. Genotype refers to the genes, whereas phenotype refers to how the fish looks. A fish can be HM genotype without actually being HM phenotype... and if they felt the need to specify that when labeling the fish, chances are that's the case. Have you actually measured the span of his caudal yet? I'm willing to bet that he's actually a wide super delta. Breeding him with a non-HM female will most likely produce very few, if any, HM offspring. I think the HM trait is determined by multiple alleles, so unless both HMs in a pairing are purebred, it's hard to get a pair to throw HM fry.

Like stated earlier, Geno means Genotype. It carries the gene. There is actually no such thing as HM geno. There would be BF geno, but HM is achieved by a combination of genes as well as water and food conditions. A super delta is 180 degrees also, but the edges of a super delta curve back towards the caudal. Having a spread of 165-180 is HMx.

It's obvious this guy has NO clue what he's talking about...if the fin spread is BIGGER than a HM, then it would be a OHM (over halfmoon), not a super delta. A SD is much easier to get than a HM and not nearly as saught after. HM's are VERY hard to get due to the many factors affecting it as fisherman already pointed out.
