Galaxy Rasbora Under Threat!

Yeah i saw that, its terrible, Arn't these amazing little fish being bred in captivity???

Well they definatly need to start doing so.....

I was desperatly wanting some of these beautiful fish (well still do) But this can really make you think twice!

is anyone actually surprised though? after the massive coverage they've had in magazines and on forums like these of course it was going to happen.

not disputing it's bad but i fail to understand how this can come as a surprise to anyone.

thankfully they seem pretty easy to breed so people will start doing so commercially pretty soon. there will probably be a 'dry spell' between them stopping catching them in the wild and the UK bred ones coming through to the shops.

It has happened shocking fast in the case of the galaxies though when compared to something like L46 which took years to get to the stage we are at now, this has happened within six months i believe.

I read this news yesterday an hour after purchasing 5 more taking my total to 10. Seems like an ideal opportunity for a little breeder set up if space allows, the first reported breeding was done in bolton if i remember correctly il have to head to PFK im sure there is stuff about it there.

ORH No whats happening i love these fish i used to have 4 but they passed away after settling in they had coloured up but then for some unknown reason they passed i was really upset but i was going to get some more but this will make me think twice and we ordered them for my lfs where i work but we only got sent in 3 this might be the reason why

I might try and breed them them, If I can get some.

I imported a large number of these initially to sell but having read the article I am devistated and have had a re-think on how to proceed. I have contacted a couple of dedicated breeders and with their help we are hoping to take on the challenge. I Would ask and if nessesary plead with you all to seriously think about if it is right to buy these at this time with the new information unless you genuinly plan to breed them. I did have an advert on Aquarist classified over a week ago offering them for £2.50 each and in the last few hours I have had so many emails it is scary!

I will probally have some that I will sell but being what I hope is a responsable fish keeper and retailer will now only concider buyers who can prove to me they do have the intention, dedication, experience and knowlege to take this challenge with me.

Breeding them in captivity isn't going to replace the ones that are missing from their wild habitat. Unless a specific breeding program is set up to replenish the depleted stocks then it could take decades for them to reach the numbers there were at before the population explosion.

While it's good to hear people want to breed them, and that they are able to be captive bred, the bigger picture means that it should really have been researched before they were taken from the wild. I don't deny wildcaught fish are a necessity in the aquarium trade, but I do think that a little bit of forward planning might have been able to stop what is essentially a very sad tale.

Does anyone have any details on how to breed them, not very much on the internet about them.
