Hi,

I have a Fluval FX5 which has been running for about 2 months now, what I need to know is when should I be cleaning the sponges, and thinking about change the other media ie ceramic rings?

Thanks

No need to change the ceramic rings, they can last for years ;)

As for the other media, wait for someone more experienced than me to advise you ;)

no need to do anything with the ceramic media as for the sponges when there full of gunk just give them a squeeze in a bucket of tank water to get rid of the sludge thats all you need to do really

just wash the sponges and ceramic media
out in old tank water they will be OK
what other media have you got in you filter if
its carbon you can throw that way and replace
and the same with peat if you are running that

As others have already said, the accepted process is to keep all of the media and clean only what you must to maintain good flow through the filter. Ceramic rings are never changed and sponges are only cleaned in used tank water. That leaves your bacterial colonies intact but gets the wo9rst of the gunk out of your filter sponges.
