I have had my yellow male guppy for a couple of months and he has always been normal but the last few days he has gone a funny shape. Instead of being strait like this ------- his tail end now bends downwards from the head back....any idea what is wrong with him and how i can treat it?

Thanks

old age or something it not a good sign thats for sure.

In young fish it could be poor feeding or something missing from the diet, or it can just be the tail to large for the fish, things is your never be totally sure, so just do the best u can.

Cuppies spines bend as they get to an old age and are possibly about to die. Mine died about ayear after her spine started to curve.

Thanks for that guys, i'm sure it cant be the diet as they are well fed and get a nice variation in there food, guess he must be old then :(

Hi Shel :)

DEFICIENCY DISEASES

Except for vitamin D deficiency, very little is known about fish deficiency diseases. The very nature of their natural food almost warrants they receive all the known vitamins, but under artificial conditions they could conceivably have a deficiency. Mineral deficiencies are doubtless common, a fact we can determine knowing the inadequate diets often fed to guppies.

Rickets
A disease caused by a deficiency of calcium or phosphorus or vitamin D; one, two or all three. A crooked spine and the resulting bend in the fish's body is the usual evidence, although the unfortunate humpback can live and even reproduce. It is not a pleasant sight among the fishes of the aquarium.
Proper lighting can prevent D deficiency; the active rays affect ergosterol in the skin of the fish and change it to the irradiated form which is vitamin D. Sometimes whole aquariums will show bent spines but generally only a few of the fishes are affected. There is no treatment; it is all a matter of prevention which is primarily a matter of proper feeding of a complete diet. TOP

Thanks for that hun, i'm pretty sure its not a deficiency in the diet as they are fed on a varied diet including vegitable foods... they get what my bettas get all except the pellets, instead they get a mixture of flakes that cover all they need.

will check out the link tho,

Thanks again
