Fry

Hi weve just spotted lots of fry in our marine tank and were not sure what they are. The only fish they can be is either blue-green chromis (we have 6) or yellow tangs (we have 6). All our other fish are singletons. We have fry at various stages so its obviously happened a few times. Weve only had the chromis for about 4 weeks but feel its more likely to be them. Can anyone advise or give me their opinion.

I would do but theyre not livebearers they are egg layers. Thanks anyway

Unlikely to be either. Tangs spawn by letting their eggs fre in the ocean currents and allowing the fry to become plankton. Any such thing living in your tank wo9uld be killed by power heads.

The "fry" you are seeing is 99.99% certain to be mysis shrimp or copopods as these will breed readily in a tank


The only success that there are in the marine worls when regards to breeding are clowns and simailrarly small fish. of of these possess similar habits by guarding their eggs that are laid in safe locations. similar to cichlids

Thanks Navarre - were taking pics this evening so hopefully u can see them. where would the mysis shrimp or copopods come from? These guys actually do look like fish. They have big eyes with bright gold rims.

I heard and have read that damsels breed in exactly the same way as clowns - so surely its possible.

Anyway whatever they are theyre facinating to watch. whoever laid the eggs did so in a cavern under an anenome which is clown/damsel behaviour - so they appear to be in a safe place till they venture.

Assuming they are fish its the chromis, that or a hybrid if you have maybe two different types of clowns or two closely related fish of some sort.

Unless you can get some very very small food to them (assuming they are fish fry) then they probably wont survive. Most people feed with newly hatched brine shrimp as this is usually the smallest thing we as hobbiests can culture.

They appear to be fine at the moment. I have several lots of fry at different stages and they are definately fish fry as ive seen them quite clearly. Since ive been aware of their present ive been feeding adding phytoplex to the tank several times a day im also waiting for a batch of brine shrimp to hatch.

Hi thought id post an update on our fry. We still have quite a few survivors and theyre growing. Ive been hatching bring shrimp everyday and feeding them on that. Im pretty sure they are Chromis but they hide so well in the rock work that it will be a while before i can get a decent pic - if they survive.

I'll bet that its the phytoplex that they are eating, then they eat the zooplankton the eats the phyto, like copapods
