Hi
I have set up a fry tank its cycled and water stats are all good
But i got to thinking the purpose of cyling is to build up bacteria to help break
the fish waste unless i am wrong which is possible,
now the fry dont seem to generate a huge ammount of waste and i am changing 50% of the water daily
am i not just washing out any bacteria that had previously built up,

Should i be adding anything else to the water

Am just curious really i could be a million miles of the mark any insight greatly appreciated

Cheers

How did you cycle the tank?

Tbh if you are doing 50% w/c daily on a fry tank the filter will cope with the bio load has the fry grow.

You are going to be fine with a fry only tank Dave. The fry do produce a surprising amount of biological load because you feed them more generously than you do adult fish. As the fish grow, their mere numbers will drive up the load gradually, so the filter bacteria just need to grow with the fish which is slow compared to normal cycling speeds. Starting with a fully cycled filter, you may lose a few bacteria at first but the recovery can easily keep pace with the fish growth so it works out fine.

Thanks very much for replies they are only young fry week old and the
tank was fully cycled used some media from my existing filter
just to speed things up a little,
just wanted to make sure i was not doing anything wrong

Cheers
