ohhh how sweet your first birth, nothing to worry about! Youve started off on the right footby adding some plants though, and its good that you have made a positive observation about your pregnant female. Water snails are absolutely harmless!!! They only eat alge and vegetation, so they keep you tank clean of dying plants. The best way to have a healthy tank is to have a small rounded community. When i say rounded, i mean a tank which has different links in a food chain. I.e plants for fry to hide away in, and fish to get oxygen from, snails to do the clearing up, and fish to look great and provide entertainment, which is free! I dont use breeding nets, or seperate pregnant fish, its far to stressfull, and stress can result in the female aborting the pregnancy, and even dying! I keep my tank natural as possible, natural is good! treat the fish as if they were in the wild, and let them get on with living happily.
On the other hand, the swordtails, and the other guppies including the mother herself will happily eat up the babies... This is not only as someone said before, becuase it is a free source of nutrition, but more so becuase, by eliminating the young, it is also eliminating the competition in the tank that more fish will bring. Competiton for feeding, and breeding. Another small fact that id like to share with you is that, fry growing up in the tank with the adults will take a little longer to mature. This is becuase the adults produce a chemical that is excreted in their pooh which slows down growth. Again going back to the reducing the competition! hope that helps, if it does, get in touch, ive got loads more knowledge to add! lark.xx
