Have just bought some frozen bloodworms, but forgot to ask my lfs how to use them. Do I put the block in whole or thaw it out first?
Sorry if this is a really daft question.

Many thanks

Thaw it first in tank water. Feeding it frozen can cause intestinal blockages and dead fish. :(

also, depending on what fish you have, a whole block might be too much. i chop a bit off with an old pair of scissors, then thaw that. :)

I have never heard that frozen foods can cause intestinal blockage or death. My frozen food comes in cubes like an ice tray, I remember trying to feed one to my fish after it half thawed on the way home from the pet store. It was a complete mess! Anyways, the cube thaws out quickly once it hits the water, its a hundred degree difference between the freezer and my tank.

Well, i once fed a betta a small chuck of a frozen cube of daphnia, expecting it to thaw in the tank. Instead, he swallowed the chunk whole! You could see where his inside was distended from the chunk of food. He laid on the bottom for a couple days and eventually died, i presume it was from intestinal blockage because that's what it looked like, but i'm not a fish expert or anything and i certainly didn't dissect him to confirm this! All i know is my lovely betta died fairly quickly after eating frozen food that hadn't been thawed. It doesn't take long to grab a little tank water and thaw the frozen food, and it's a precaution i will personally never forego again.

I use the small cubes too. My LFS told me there is no need to thaw, just put the cube into the tank. So far, it has worked fine for me. The cubes do thaw out fast once it hits the water.

my fish have been known to grab food before it has even hit the water....feeding it frozen is not something i'll be risking. :/ it doesn't take long to thaw it anyway. :)

if there's a hundred degree diff between your freezer and tank doesn't that mean you tank is boiling?

i thaw my frozen brine shrimp b4 feeding them to the fish it does not take long at all. but i always do it to early like an hour or 2 early b4 i actually feed them for sum reason.i dont know y so i just put the cup into the refrigerator so the food doesnt spoil or anything at least i thin that works n hope so.

I usually thaw the bloodworms for my betta in a little tank water before feeding. he only has a little of the cube as well, so I use a butterknife to get a chunk off.

But even then, wouldn't that put the frozen at about 32F? My tank is 76-78F, no where near 100 degrees difference. I have a feeling it was just an overexaggeration.
