Hi, All!
I've been talking about switching from gravel to sand for quite awhile now. The other day, my husband said we were going to go out and look for sand and not come back until we got some. Since I'm typing this, we obviously found some sand
Otherwise, I'd still be stuck in a store somewhere!
We got a bag of play sand at Menard's - 50# for $2.10 (including tax). Horrible customer service/help, but that's beside the point. We were going to go to a pool supply store for pool filter sand, but we couldn't find the store.
I washed a little bit of the sand the other night (turned out to be the perfect amount!) and finally got a chance to put it in this morning, after hubby left for work. I took the fish out of the tank and sent 'em outside to play for awhile since it's warm out today...oh, wait...
(Just seeing if you're paying attention!) Anyway, took the fish out, turned off the filter, drained water, etc. Put the sand in - it looks great! Even before I put the plants back in, I loved the way it looked. Then I re-planted the plants (those poor plants have been pulled up and re-planted too many time) and added a few hiding places (flower pots and such). Added a sock of gravel, so the happy little bacteria could migrate (the sock looks quite lovely, I might add
Now the filter is back on, the plants are planted, and the fish are back in there.
The Corys LOVE the sand! They've been digging around in it. I gave 'em some tubifix worms (freeze dried) and they really enjoyed those. They could eat 'em off the bottom this time! It's so much fun to watch the Corys now (it was before too, but it's even more-so now). They use their little barbels to dig through the sand and look for food. If anyone has Corys in a gravel-bottomed tank, I highly suggest switching to sand, if possible. The Corys like it much better. (Or even put a dish of sand in there, so they have some to dig in.)
I have a little money from selling a few books, so once the fish store(s) open up, I'm going to go get my Pepper Cory a buddy and get some more plants. The tank needs more greenery!
Just had to share...
