I have a Semi-Snowflake Clownfish that was accustomed to having an anemone to zip in and out of when she was at the LFS. Now that I have her in my tank she is attempting to use my torch coral as a substitute. I would be fine with this but my torch coral doesn't like it so much. I had a bad experience with an anemone so I would rather not try another. Would I be better off trading in my torch for a hammer or frog spawn? Would one be better than the other? Getting rid of the clown is not an option as I drove 3 hours for her and couldn't give her up.

To be honest the frogspawn or hammer wouldn't like it either, they would get irritated and stressed. A lot of people do have success with toadstools (sarcophyton).

I have read somewhere (can't remember now) that if you want your clown to host a particular coral, find a picture on the internet of a clown hosting that coral and tape it to the tank - the clown can then 'learn' that's what they should be doing!

HTH :good:

how bout a torch coral?

I also agree though that a clown is likely to pester the coral and you wouldn't see the best of it
The clowns I;ve kept have just stayed in the one area anyway nearer the powerhead outlets

Thats a joke, right?

Any euphyllia be it a torch, hammer, frogspawn is unlikely to enjoy the attentions of a clown - why not try something like clove polyps, xenia or the ever faithful toadstool. however it will be the luck of the draw i'm afraid :look:

seriously!

click me

not sure that's where I saw it originally.

It kind of makes sense though, in the wild I guess clowns learn from their parents or other clowns, the same way many other animals and children learn how to do things - by seeing what others do!

It would certainly be worth a try ;)

However, to be a 'fair' test you would have to be able to prove that a clown was going into a coral and no other coral because of a photo on the tank.

That would mean you would have to have many tanks, set up with the same type of clowns, with the same corals and types of anemones, same water, heating, lighting conditions etc - when I see an experiment like that, I will believe it :good:

But thanks for sharing, I guess i'm a born cynic :look:

Well I have the torch coral now but she has caused it to go into heavy withdraw. I may get talked into another anemone but I would prefer another coral for my tanks safety. I just hoped the frog spawn or hammer would be more accepting.

I have had great success with anthelia... They seriously abuse that stuff, including ripping out chunkc of it when they are breeding...

I have a hammer and frogspawn which readily accept the hosting role for clowns. Both my clowns Ted and Dolly love my hammer and have even ignored a bubble tipped anemone. However I do think this is the exception and not the rule. Incidently I have some hammer and frogspawn up for sale if anyone is interested (well you can't blame me for trying to drum up a little bit of business).

Kindest regards

Joe

Well I was talked into anemone by my trustworthy LFS and my Clown took to it right away so I will be able to another torch or frogspawn coral as I do not like hammer corals all that much. Thank you for your advice!
