2 months back i saw a the POTM winner was a frog. i wandered who else keeps them and could they offer any advice?

im looking into keeping a frog . at the moment i have a 15G tank here it is...

the tank is as it stands at the moment. (more will be done before getting the frog, which i'll need help with), the land area will be expanded

im hoping to have a pool of water and heat that with a 50W aquarium heater. will this work well enough for the frog?

im hopeing to add a waterfall and filter (i'll make it all in 1 using a small pump and fish tank filter media) will this provide enough humidity?

i heard Dendrobates Auratus is a good beginner frog?

what types of plants safe for this type of frog? (aquatic and none,i keep planted fish tanks so could i use some plants from them? e.g xmas moss and anubias?)

sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance for any advice =]

Dendrobates Cant swim well against popular belief, better off with more land mass with a tiny pool or dish at one end. i used a deep dish as frogs urinate in water usually if its pool of water you will need to think how to rid of the ammonia daily changes add a filter? you may need a heat matt for the winter and you will need to replace gravel with cocohusk. Its not a cheap hobby to set mind

Before you a frog start culturing flies, you need to the hang of before you get think about frogs.

Ill try and help you as you think of questions

thanks =] i went down to my fish shop today (also supply frogs lizards and other animals) the retail price for the frog i wanted is £120... so its way out of my price range. thanks for the info though. i still might go into it in the future :good:

hey mike455555- a lot of 5's lol. I added some stuff to my post a while ago about the cost of the frogs. I know a bit more about them after having them a couple of months, BigbruiserAl was helpful and he's had them for longer than me!

I'd say the same as BigbruiserAl, you cannot have that much water. The frogs would drown I'm afraid. They are much more land based, you don't even have to put any water in the tank at all if you don't want to. Here's a couple of pictures of my vivarium;

as you can see, my water area is very shallow and I've lined it with pebbles which form a hill in the middle that goes straight to the land- so they can easily escape the water.

with the aquarium heater- I would be really careful with this, in fact I'd recommend not using one as because it's inside the tank, the frogs could easily get burned on it (they are good climbers). generally, a heat matt is used on the outside of the tank- you can get ones which would stick to the glass. mine goes in a seperate section beneath the vivarium- it lays on top of a layer of glass but is separated from the top sheet of glass that forms the base of the vivarium so that the glass will not crack from the heat- it's confusing I know.

for the humidity you can either buy a misting system (which are upwards of £70) or you can get a plastic water sprayer and fill it with bottled still water, and regularly spray the tank all over. it's useful to get a thermometer and humidity measurer. the temperature needs to be around 23-25c and high humidity- over 70% if you can.

Dendrobates azureus are good beginner frogs too-

and dendrobates leucomelas which I think is what BigbruiserAl has- they are yellow and black. there's quite a few more which are good for beginners though.

as for plants, I would research those too- I'm not sure that aquatic plants would be ok. the book I've got has a list of good plants to use.

I hope this helps you! any more questions, feel free to ask. I'd recommend getting a book if you're going to consider it for the future. I've got a good one called "Poison Dart Frog" by Amanda and Greg Sihler. I'm really enjoying them as pets and would definitely recommend them, just research in depth first!

My frogs only cost me £4 each :)

Mike why don't u just get African dwarf frogs their completely aquatic and very easier to keep then land and water based frogs as they are as said completely aquatic and don't leave the water

They are escape artists though so all hole need boarding up I lost one from an escape she escaped and my cat thought oooo hoppy thing looks tasty lol she was only a kitten though lol

thanks for all the info guys. it might be a project for the future. im also thinking of getting a water dragon. so its going to be one or the other and as i can hold the dragon im inclined towards it

That's a good point, poison dart frogs are definitely not pets you can handle regularly! I think I've only touched mine once in their transfer to the new vivarium. They're very fragile. Good idea from liquid skills though, african dwarf frogs are pretty easy to look after. Good luck!
