One of my friends, who I have recently converted to a fishaholic, has a betta that has developed pop-eye. Is Melafix a good treatment for it, and if not, what it? I told her I'd let her have some of my fish medicines to treat him, I just need to know which one(s) to let her borrow :p

Popeye in usually caused by poor water conditions. I would try a large water change and leave the lights off for 24 hours.

If that doesnt work, I would add maracyn and melafix.

Is the fish in a tank of its own? A Gourami of mine recently died of pop-eye after the other fish seemed to like nudging this new found protrusion from the poor animal...the pop-eye eventually "popped" due to this and so If ever I saw symptoms on my fish again I would make sure they were on their own.

Cheers,

Alex

True, it does come from poor water quality, but there are other thngs that can cause it. One being rough handling....my red hm busted out with popeye after he took a four foot tumble from my hands and into a waiting container full of water on the floor. It was an excellent shot mind you but I heard him thud onto the side of the container on his way down, the next day he had popeye. I used colloidal silver and it was gone the next day.
